    When embarking on a journey of memory training, it’s common to encounter obstacles that might seem intimidating. One of the most recurring challenges is related to memory recall, an essential part of memory training that can be significantly impacted in the initial stages. However, with some insights and techniques, this can be managed effectively, leading to an improved memory recall experience.

    The Paradox of Recall in Memory Training

This occurrence is not unusual and, in fact, is something frequently observed among beginners in memory training, and even among those under memory coaching.

These are vital skills necessary to convert seemingly nonsensical information into something your brain can comprehend and recall.

    During a 12-hour flight, instead of practicing memorization, I chose to focus on visualization. The reason was simple: I didn’t want to exhaust my memory locations, an important factor in memory training. Repeatedly using up your locations could leave you with nothing to go back to for memorizing.

    So, I decided to visualize numbers, words, cards – to take every peg word and create a vivid image associated with it. The more detailed the image, the better your recall. For instance, if you see the word ‘cat,’ don’t picture any random cat. Try to imagine a personal cat, hear its hissing, or recall a time it scratched you. This level of specificity is even more critical when dealing with abstract words like ‘imagination.’ Everyone has a different image for imagination – colorful, brain-related, or something else. The more specific and detailed the image, the better the recall.

    Beyond Memory Techniques: Incorporating Visualization in Reading

    This visualization technique is not just for those well-versed in memory training; it’s equally beneficial for beginners. If you pick up a book and start reading, you can practice visualizing the context of what you read, not necessarily every single word. This method serves as an excellent warm-up to memory training. Just like you wouldn’t dive straight into a workout without warming up your muscles, it’s beneficial to warm up your brain before a memorization session.

    To further practice, you could go through your LinkedIn feed, look at a person’s name and title, and try to create a story out of it. You don’t need to go back and recall that because this exercise is part of the training process.

    Another helpful resource for memory training is the website Memory League. You can use this platform to practice visualizing without focusing on recall. Simply go through the memorization phase, then skip the recall stage and return to the visualization process.

    It’s more than just learning techniques

    Memory training is a rewarding journey filled with challenges and milestones. However, it’s important to remember that the journey is not just about learning techniques, but also about understanding and tuning into the way your brain functions and responds. The art of visualization is a key component of this process.

    As you progress in your memory training, you’ll notice a distinct improvement in how you visualize, memorize, and recall information. You’ll find yourself naturally creating richer, more detailed images and linking them to the information you’re trying to remember. Even abstract concepts or words will become more tangible and accessible, aiding in more robust recall and improved overall memory.

    Furthermore, incorporating visualization techniques into your daily reading can provide additional training for your brain, even outside dedicated memory training sessions. Remember, the ultimate goal is to engage your mind, form meaningful connections, and create a network of information that your brain can easily navigate.

    Warm-up exercises for the brain are as crucial as physical exercises for the body before a workout. By training your brain to visualize before diving into memorization, you’re setting the stage for more efficient and effective memory training sessions.

    It’s worth noting that this process is not a race, but a marathon. Like any training, improvements in memory and recall abilities will happen over time and with consistent practice. Expecting overnight results can lead to frustration and hinder your progress. Embrace the journey with patience and keep refining your skills.
